Air Conditioning Tips for Summer

Keeping your home cool during the summer is important for the comfort and safety of all those inside. Our HVAC experts have compiled summer air conditioning tips to help you stay cool and save energy.

1. Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance will ensure your A/C is up to the task of cooling and dehumidifying your indoor air during the summer. Maintenance tasks include:

  • Cleaning coils
  • Checking refrigerant levels
  • Inspecting the system for any issues

This will improve performance and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

2. Change Air Filters

Dirty air filters can reduce your A/C’s efficiency and increase energy costs. Change your filters every 1-2 months to maintain strong airflow and help your system perform when you need it most.

3. Use a Programmable Thermostat

With a programmable thermostat, you can establish different temperature settings for different times of the day, aiding in energy conservation when you are away from home.

Set your thermostat a few degrees higher when you’re away and program it to cool your home down before your arrival.

4. Keep Curtains and Blinds Closed

Sunlight streaming through windows can significantly increase indoor temperatures. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to reduce the load on your A/C system.

5. Use Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans make your home cooler by circulating cool air. They do not overwork the A/C, making them useful tools.

Turn off fans when you leave the room to save as much energy as possible. If you reverse your ceiling fans for winter, flip the switch so they begin pushing air again.

6. Seal and Insulate Your Home

Ensure your home is properly sealed and insulated to prevent cool air from escaping and warm air from entering. Check for gaps around windows, doors, and ductwork, and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping.

7. Avoid Heat-Generating Activities

Limit the use of heat-generating appliances like ovens, stoves, and dryers during the hottest part of the day. Opt for grilling outside or using a microwave to keep your home cooler.

8. Install Window Film

Window films can reduce heat gain by blocking UV rays, keeping your home cooler and protecting your furniture from sun damage.

9. Optimize Thermostat Placement

Ensure your thermostat is placed away from heat sources like lamps, appliances, or direct sunlight. Heat sources can cause your thermostat to read a higher temperature, making your A/C work harder than it needs to.

10. Upgrade Your Air Conditioner

Consider upgrading to a high-efficiency air conditioning unit if your current one is outdated or not energy-efficient. Modern models consume less energy and offer improved cooling performance. This can help you reduce your energy costs, enhancing your overall comfort.
